Professional Curriculum

Mauro Minelli is director of the IMID Centre, a Care Unit for the treatment of immune-mediated disorders that he himself planned, supporting with firm belief its feasibility, promoting its establishment, which he achieved in 2008, when the Unit was implemented within the Hospital “San Pio di Petralcina”, Campi Salentina (Local Health Authority, ASL-LE).

He is Professor-in-charge at the University of Salento, Lecce, where he teaches Occupational Medicine (Italian disciplinary area Med/44), for the students of various courses of the Faculty of Sciences of Education.
Within the courses of the same Faculty, he is also in charge of a series of integrative lectures on the theme “Chronic inflammatory pathologies: connections of cause and effect between polluting agents and diseases”, within the teaching of General and Applied Hygiene (Italian disciplinary area Med/42).

As a Professor-in-charge at the Telematic University “Pegaso”, he teaches Environment Hygiene (disciplinary area Med/42) within the course of studies in Sciences of Education, Faculty of Humane Sciences.

During his professional career, started in 1987, he has long collaborated with the Chair of Allergology and Clinical Immunology, University of Bari, for his competence in performing educative as well as scientific activities.

The output of his educative activity unfolds through a series of congressional events, organized in direct collaboration with the Institute of Allergology and Clinical Immunology of the University of Bari, headed by Prof. Alfredo Tursi, in the following years:
1988 – Interdisciplinary Conference on immuno-allergic diseases “Atypical complex-diagnosis syndromes” – Lecce December 3rd 1988;
1993 – Meeting on the theme “Environment and quality of life” – Santa Cesarea Terme, April 1st-3rd 1993;
1996 – Congress on “Habitat and Health: socio-sanitary and technical-environmental aspects”, Gallipoli, April 29th 1996;
1997 – Congress on “Habitat ’97, or, controversial aspects of human living”, Lecce, December 4th-6th 1997;
2004 – 1st Theoretical-practical updating course in Clinical Allergology, Lecce, April 23rd-24th, 2004;
2005 – 2nd Theoretical-practical updating course in Clinical Allergology, Lecce, May 20th-21st 2005.

His scientific activity has involved diverse collaborations through updating articles and research reports. For one of this latter, “Integrated program of allergologic screening of school-age children”, the Medical Association of the Province of Lecce awarded him a scholarship for the year 1990. The research was conducted in agreement with the former Local Health Authority USL LE/2 of  Campi Salentina (in Salento Medico – 1993, N. 8-9, year XVI:19-21).

From 1991 through 1995, he coordinated the activity of Community Allergology at the Local Health Units of Poggiardo (ex USL LE/9) and Maglie (ex USL LE/8).

From 1992 to 1996, he was member-elect within the Executive Board of the Italian Association of Aerobiology (AIA), chairing its Interregional Section “Apulia-Lucania” from 1998 to 2000.

He has also coordinated a National Research Group which, on behalf of the Italian Association of Aerobiology, conducted for two years (1995-1997) the ‘polycentric’ study, “Annual biological rhythm of allergenic mites”. The study was chiefly aimed at assessing the impact of airborne biologic pollutants indoors (in Italian Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, 1997, N.4, Vol.7, p.18-22).

From 1996 to 1999 he planned and coordinated the triennial research protocol “Integrated system of outdoor and indoor environmental monitoring, and assessment of the impact of exposition to biologic pollutants on the population of the Salento area”, conducted on behalf of the Board of Lecce Province, under the aegis of the Italian Association of Aerobiology (in Salento Medico, 1999, N. 1-2-3-, Vol. XXII:19-26).

In 1997, he got the certificate of participation in the Master, “Contemporary management of patients with respiratory diseases”, held in June 1997, at Mcmaster University – Department of Medicine Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. He also got a certificate of participation in the Master “Globalization and health services”, issued at the end of the academic year 2003-2004, by the Research Centre for Institution Building and Development – University of Urbino, with lectures of advanced education in the area of organization and management of health-care services.

In 2001 he promoted and coordinated the Unit of Local Research within a biennial project on the theme, “Monitoring of environment/air in the Province of Lecce and assessment of possible clinical correlations of the impact of polluting agents on the population exposed”.

In 2003 he joined, as a scientific advisor, the operative Unit which promoted the research project, “Electromagnetic Pollution and Impact on Health: Between clinical assessment and possible preventive measures”, whose aim was to draw an expositive map of the Salento territory vs. electromagnetic fields.

In 2004 he created, then promoting its ensuing implementation, the Outpatient Surgery for Allergology and Clinical Immunology, attached to the Operative Unit of Internal Medicine of the Hospital facilities at Campi Salentina, which has since produced medical activities in substantiated exponential growth, through professional services and targeted hospitalization.

The centre for Allergology and Clinical Immunology at the Hospital of Campi Salentina has often been included in relevant national polycentric inquiries, among which the observational study “Poli S.M.A.I.L.” (in “Allergy” 62 (suppl. 83): 167-551, Journal Compilation 2007 – abstract 666), conducted in collaboration with Stallergenes Italia, in order to study the “allergic march” in polysensitized patients treated with immunotherapy. The Centre has produced, among many others, the observational study, “Clinical applications of genetics in allergology. The crucial role of HLA DQ2 and DQ8 haplotypes in the effectiveness of immunotherapy”, endorsed by the Ethical Committee of Lecce Health Authority. (in Gluten Sensitivity: ruolo della dieta nell’efficacia dell’immunoterapia [Gluten Sensitivity: the dietary role in the effectiveness of immunotherapy], by Laura De Santos, dissertation for the degree in Agricultural, Food and Nutrition Biology, University of Salento, academic year 2008/2009).

Elective relevance has, moreover, been given – together with enlarged strategic qualified partnership – to the definition of diagnostic, therapeutic and advanced health-care protocols in the field of systemic nickel allergopathies (SNAS: Systemic Nickel Allergy Syndrome) (in Notiziario Allergologico, Vol. 24, N. 1-2, March-June 2006, pp. 44-46; in International Journal of Immunopathology and Pharmacology, 2005, Vol. 18, N. 4(S), pp.19-20; in Atti 24° Congresso Nazionale della Società Italiana di of Allergologia e Immunologia Clinica, Rome, May 4th-7th 2005; in Rev Port Immunoallergologia, 2008, 16 (2): 135-147). Significantly, in relation to the same applicative field, the IMID Centre, Campi Salentina, has been lately included in the first prospect double-blind study controlled with placebo, which has the aim to assess “the clinical effectiveness and tolerability in use of a hypo-sensitizing oral therapy with nickel sulphate in patients with SNAS (Systemic Nickel Allergy Syndrome)”.

In agreement with the IMID Association (of which he is scientific advisor) he has implemented a project of strategic collaboration with the USP (University for Development and Peace, Bari), with the primary objective to highlight and clarify epidemiologic observations, as well as to assess the overall impact of immune-mediated chronic inflammatory diseases on both society and health-care system.

He has planned and now coordinates a Research Group which, on behalf of the Local Health Authority of Lecce, is committed to follow the medical protocol, “Assessment of the genotype/phenotype condition related to the response to drugs in patients with a DHR or a ADR picture”. The study, conducted in agreement with the Genetics Laboratory of the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences and Technologies (DiSteBa), University of Salento, has the purpose to identify the pharmacological routes which may be more appropriate for patients who show clinical pictures of Severe Hypersensitiveness (DHR) or, anyhow, Adverse Drug Reaction (ADR).

He has been director of the Clinical  Immunology Day Service, implemented by the Local Health Authority of Montalbano Jonico (ex Local Health Authority ASL MT/5), at whose Medical Facilities (at Policoro and Stigliano) he worked as an advisor from 2007 to 2009.

Since December 2008 he has been director of the IMID Centre, a Simple Operative Unit attached to the UOC (Complex Operative Unit) of Internal Medicine at the Hospital “San Pio di Petralcina”, Campi Salentina, committed to the clinical framing and treatment of immune-mediated inflammatory diseases.

He has supported and progressively implemented activities of scientific divulgation and promotion of the Multidisciplinary Model “IMID” in applicative protocols of Basic Clinical Immunology, through thematic conferences and lectures acknowledged by the Ministry of Health, in accordance with the current regulations on Continuing Education in Medicine.
